SAKHA is a pioneering community based organization in Odisha dedicated to empowering the Transgender and Hijra community by upholding their rights, dignity, and social inclusion. Since 2007, we have grown from a small support group in Bhubaneswar into a multifaceted organization reaching nearly 5000 TG and Hijra individuals across the state. We focus on creating livelihood opportunities through skill building, training, advocacy, and networking with industries and CSR partners to shift the community from begging to dignified employment. SAKHA also operates the Garima Greh Programme under NISD, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, offering shelter, training, education, and holistic support to 25 transgender persons. Beyond gender inclusion, we serve women, children, youth, and marginalized families through health, HIV intervention, education, newborn care, and women and child development programmes. Our active role in emergency response including COVID 19 relief and vaccination reflects our long standing commitment to protecting vulnerable communities.

On International Women’s Day, SAKHA organized community events at Th. Rampur and Tikiri to promote women’s health and empowerment. We formed 40 adolescent clubs across various Gram Panchayats and conducted orientation sessions on health, hygiene, and well-being. Our team updated ANC, PNC, and adolescent health mapping in the assigned villages. Till date, we have identified 706 ANC mothers, 1090 PNC mothers, 1404 adolescent girls, 1223 infants, and 5 transgender persons under the programme. This initiative continues to strengthen mother and child health care through awareness, tracking, and community engagement.
In collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defence, SAKHA and Garima Greh organized a transformative driving skill-building program for transgender individuals in Bhubaneswar. The initiative was inaugurated on December 29th, 2023, at Hotel Arya Palace, with guests Sadhana Mishra, Meera Parida, and Meghna Sahoo motivating the participants. A total of 25 transgender persons received structured four-wheeler driving training aimed at improving livelihood opportunities. The programme began on December 18th, 2023, and continued until February 2024 with hands-on training and confidence-building sessions. This initiative highlights the commitment of SAKHA, Garima Greh, and NISD to strengthen economic independence and enhance social inclusion for the transgender community.
We organized 14 one-day sensitization program on the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 and Rules, 2020. The sessions highlighted key rights related to education, employment, healthcare, and identity certificates for transgender persons. Participants also learned about welfare schemes from NISD and SSEPD that support livelihood, housing, and financial inclusion. The program addressed challenges such as stigma, school dropout, limited healthcare awareness, and difficulties in accessing essential documents. Experts facilitated discussions on welfare measures, penalties for violations, and the role of SDGs in promoting gender equality and inclusion.
